I stumbled upon a page very recently and the owner had written letters to her children yearly on their birthdays over the years. I think it’s such a good idea and wish I had found out about it before now. It’ll be such a good reminder for all the little things that tend to be forgotten as the years roll by. So now that I have learnt of this, here is my letter for Riri on her third birthday.

Dearest Riri,
How are you three already?!
It was just the other day that we were in the hospital, bringing you home, trying to figure out looking after a new born baby and now you’re a fully grown little person.
This year has been so surreal since we’ve all been at home since March due to the current global pandemic! It has been amazing blessing for me as your mum because I have watched you reach milestones that your nursery staff would have normally been telling me about.
When we were in lockdown, it was lovely cooking, baking, playing, painting, colouring and even “exercising” with you. It was definitely fun trying to find new way ways to keep you entertained though it wasn’t all fun and games especially when mummy and daddy both had to work. But you were such a little trooper and showed as much patience as could be expected of a two year old. So, thank you for that!
You still love your iggle piggle and go to bed and nursery with him! You’ve got three! That’s right three Igglepiggles which you call “baby pigs”, “mummy piggle” and “daddy piggle”. Why you have three, is a story for another day. You love to play pirates with daddy and currently, one of your favourite books is “On a pirate ship”. You love to jump on the bed and the sofa and love riding around on your scooter. You also love dancing and listening to “Sing, Sing, Sing with Cbeebies’. You’ve grown to enjoy bathtime and hair wash days and can play with bubbles & balloons for ages. You’re showing your love for football and your skills are amazing. You get that from your dad whom you’ve nicknamed “my dame-dame”.
You have developed so much with your language, personality and independent playing. You know your colours, numbers, shapes and so much more! Your memory is superb and your imagination so brilliant. Recently, you’ve been sitting and playing for ages by coming up with amusing rescue scenarios with the Paw patrol.
Yes, this year has been all about the Paw Patrol for you. Everything is referenced with Paw Patrol and you know all their little sayings. You can pretty much recite the entire Mighty Pups movie and I like to say “there’s too much paw patrol in your life” which makes you giggle! You even make daddy tell you “Ryder stories” every night before going to sleep. So for your pleasure, you’re getting a Paw patrol themed birthday and I can’t wait to see your face when you see your surprise! All you’ve consistently asked for for your birthday is a “Chasey-wasey” cake. We’re also taking you to the zoo for the first time which you’re excited about and have told everyone!

Two year old you has been an absolute delight and I’m grateful that we have had a “terrific twos” with you. You even potty trained shortly after your 2nd birthday in November. That’s how awesome you are and we’ve finally had a breakthrough with your night time sleep too thanks to you dropping that PM nap over the lockdown period.
You are always energetic and a joy to be around. You are a constant source of laughter and happiness (even in your “No mummy” moments). You give the best Riri cuddles and I’m super blessed to be your mum.
I am extremely grateful that you are going into a new year and know that it will be another wonderfully blessed one!
Love, Mummy.
