Journey to 68!

I’m not a new year’s resolution kind of person. In fact, I always joke that the only new year’s resolution that I’ve stuck to was the one where I decided that I was no longer going to have one.

That being said, in this year, I need to lose about 12kg to be at my “ideal” weight according to the BMI calculations. This revelation in itself is not even a new thing, because I have been on a healthy weight loss journey for about 3 years now. In 2018, I signed up for a Lifestyle Challenge programme, which involves being in an accountability group, meal prepping and submitting post work out sweatfies and calorie burns. I was still on maternity leave at the time and I lost 10kg (started at 91kg). When I returned to work in October that year, I couldn’t keep up with my workouts in which I was burning up to 1k calories actively in one day. The weight crept back up slowly and I put on another 3kg. I restarted the journey in May, 2019; lost 8kg and managed to keep this up till November when work and all other life events including Christmas once again “got in the way”. This time, I put on  double of my previous weight gain at 6kg…! Don’t judge me too harshly.

In January of 2020, I started back on the journey, and even through the pandemic, (I found that exercising helped a lot) managed to reach 73.4kg in August – my lowest weight in about 5 years. Then everything went down (up) hill from there. Though I was still exercising very well, including going to the gym when it was open, I was no longer totally intentional about my food (and drink). And as the saying goes, “you can’t out exercise a bad diet”. Certainly very true in my case, because in addition to all the Christmas merriment, I find myself again at the 80kg mark!

I’ve decided to step away from my lifestyle accountability group for the time being for several reasons. Yes sure, it helps to see other people posting their daily calorie burns to motivate you and also cheering you on, but ultimately, it is my responsibility to do the work! So, on that note, I am challenging myself to eat better again, attempt to workout 5 days a week, drink at least 2 litres of water daily and hopefully, lose about 1kg a week for the next 12 weeks/84 days/3 months.

I normally have my meals prepped for the week on Sundays. I like Sunday as start day because by Monday, I feel like I have already completed one day and that is mentally very helpful for me. Exercises that I love include TaeBo, Body Combat, Cardio Boxing, Total Body HIIT with Heather Robertson and Walking with Leslie. I’ll include some resistance bands & dumbbells and may also try to incorporate a couch to 5k plan. I hate running but some of the plans I’ve seen look doable. I’ll see how that goes.

I will try to post daily or at least every other day for my accountability. I switched to FitBit over Christmas and will join some of the challenges on there to help keep me going.

The next few weeks should be interesting (and maybe, fun)!

xx
